The sentinel lymph node(s) will be sent to the hospital’s pathology department to assess if cancer cells are present. The surgeon may also remove the breast tumor during this procedure. A common method for removal is to make a small incision in the underarm area and removes the sentinel node. Once the sentinel lymph node is located, the surgeon may elect to remove the sentinel lymph node. 2ĭuring surgery, the surgeon then uses a small detector to identify the sentinel lymph nodes that contain the radiotracer. Uptake of the radiotracer in one or more sentinel nodes in these images does not mean your disease has spread, but it will point the surgeon to the location of the sentinel lymph node(s) for removal and further evaluation. 2įollowing the injection of the radiotracer, a set of presurgical images may be requested to help the surgeon see where the sentinel lymph node(s) are located in your body. The patient is often injected with a lymph node mapping agent, called a radiotracer, that produces a radioactive signal that is “traceable” by your physicians. The method can vary based on the hospital. First, the sentinel lymph node (or nodes) must be located. Sentinel lymph nodes are commonly identified during your breast cancer surgery.
